Handguns are basically illegal here - only some competitive marksmen can get them, in special circumstances...For shotguns, you need exceptionally good reason, like you are a farmer or something. You certainly aren't allowed to carry round guns in self-defence.
It's also illegal to carry on your person in public a flick knife or a blade longer than 3 inches .
I think ours are more strict than yours, BG, because we aren't allowed to own automatic weapons (and I think semi-automatics are pretty restricted too). It's pretty much just rifles for hunting or target shooting or pest control. Some handguns for competitions. Most Australians don't own guns, I think.
you need a special liscense to carry if you want to carry it concealed... but otherwise I think you've just gotta not be a criminal. Not that all the criminals don't have guns...
we also like knives here... you can buy and carry whatever you want as long you don't kill people with them. (I do think there might be some limitations on minors owning switchblades (I assume that's what you were talking about when you said 'flick knives' SubT))
they want to start a new program here in Phoenix to sell all the confiscated guns they get of criminals to fund the 'silent witness' program (where you call up and turn somebody in). That'll be interresting if it passes
Haha, love the squirrel story. I was camping out on Casper mountain last night (and the night before) and I only saw one squirrel, but I see them all over the place here. One was looking in the window the other day, watching me. I think it might have been waiting for me to turn my back so it could sneak some guns past.

I carried a gun concealed in AZ because after almost getting car jacked once I actually didn't feel safe anymore. That and I've just always been a gun person...lol Now I own a shotgun, a 9mm Beretta, and a chinese SKS. I actually haven't carried since a bit after moving here to Oregon since I don't have that "unsafe" feeling like I did in Phoenix. My guns are all at a friends house now since I live with a roomie who has a 7 year old that I'd rather not have any of my guns around... for obvious reasons. I pretty much only shoot for sport though, to me it's great stress relief.
That's a pretty funny story about my little squirrel buddies.
