We watched "Miss Potter" today. Richard is on his computer reading the books she wrote, now. Imagine getting married after the age of 40...yet your mother disapproving of your chosen husband.
I read books involving that period and just prior, but omg, actually seeing in a movie totally reduces the "romantic" flavor that books try to give it. 32 (or 38) years old and your father denying the guy who asks to marry you?? Treating a children's book writer/artist as if it's a waste of time? The whole image thing..can't be seen being friendly with tradespeople....argh. That would drive me nuts being so hemmed in by social demands and expectations.
I read an article about her several months ago, and I kept it cuz I thought it was so amazing etc.
Apparently, when electricity became more common in the countryside, she only allowed it to be used in her barns because 'maybe the cows will like it' .
There's more to the article than that, obviously...I just can't be bothered to type it out .
Edit: Actually, lol, I just found the article online by searching that quote - I think it is rather good, though it doesn't have all the nice pictures etc.
